Iggy Azalea Reflects on Launching Memecoin, Making Millions on OnlyFans

In a new interview with ABC’s Nightline, which can be seen above, Iggy Azalea reflected on her time in the music industry and all the ventures she’s undertaken since retiring, including the launch of a meme coin cryptocurrency, Mother.

“It seemed to me that, especially with meme tokens, they were central to virality, and that really interests me, obviously,” she said in the interview around the 7:45 point. It was pointed out to her that she’s had a lot of success with viral moments in the past, and she added, “Yeah, I think I am, [I] have been pretty successful at it.”

Iggy Azalea launched Mother Iggy last year and the coin reached a peak value of $240 million. According to Coingecko, it now has a market cap of roughly $9.5 million. While memecoins are technically cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, it’s a side of crypto that even many pro-crypto investors are skeptical of due to their market volatility.

She said all the other ventures she’s pursued since leaving behind have been about regaining “control” of her career.

Reflecting on her other moves following her rap career, she revealed that she suffered nerve damage around the time she launched an account on OnlyFans.

“I just ended up getting what’s called a chronically non-healing wound, because I had a PICC line in my arm,” she said. “Then we would take the PICC line out and then take hot bikini pictures. I turned lemons into lemonade with that, I really did.”

In less than a year on OnlyFans, she made a staggering amount of money. Asked if she really made $48 million through the platform, she said it was “a little lower” than that, but it was still “life-changing” for her. Last year, she joined mobile provider Unreal Mobile as chief brand officer and co-founder, for which she also appeared in multiple commercials. She’s also gotten into online streaming, including a stream earlier this year where she revealed the bizarre questions the artist formerly known as Kanye West asked her during a meeting.

Elsewhere in the interview, she reflected on the criticism she faced at the height of her music career.

“I was in a battle zone, man,” she said around the 1:25 point of the interview. “I was stepping on landmines left and right, and I just couldn’t survive it. It’s not survivable.” Asked if she felt some criticism she faced as a white woman in a Black genre felt “unfair,” she said it did at the time, but some of it was valid.

“There are also some things that I walked right into and deserve, or things that I could have done better, but I can’t sit here all day long boohooing about that,” she said. “It’s just part of life.”

Despite making music in a Black genre as a white woman, she said that she ultimately felt “very welcome.”

“I think it got a little bit more complicated later on where we had a moment, politically and in culture, where I was a part of a bigger picture,” she said. “I said things that I shouldn’t have said in retrospect as I’ve gotten older, [where] I’m like, ‘That’s a horrible fucking take that you had.’ … I think sometimes I regret having an opinion at all because it wasn’t necessarily my place to have an opinion.”
